I switched from Ubuntu to Arch Linux

by kylepotts on Jun.11, 2009, under Tech

So, as most of you have seen. I have made a big switch from WIndows to Linux, that was a big step in and of itself. I have never used Windows again since I have switched. In fact I deleted my Windows partition while installing Arch Linux.

So why have I switched? I switched form the same reason I switched from Windows, it was too bloated. Ubuntu come with so many packages that I didn’t need that it slowed me down. The Arch Linux FTP/HTTP install takes so little space compared to the base Ubuntu install.

Also in my opinion I think the pacman (Arch package tool) is much better at handeling packages than apt(Debians package tool). Pacman justr easily download packages in a second, and installs them without worry, with Ubuntu I had many stuggles to get some packages to be downloaded by apt.

Now I am not saying Ubuntu is a great distro for Linux beginners, because indeed it is. What I am saying is that any person who feels confident that they can take a step above Ubuntu should definitley take a look at arch Linux. The documentation on the site including their wiki can be helpful in figuring out how to install arch.

So, in the end Linux (either Ubuntu,Arch,Red Hat,Suse,Puppy etc)still defeats Windows right? I still think that Linux can change the world, free software + community = something great. Thats the way I see Linux, and the Linux community.

P.S. To all the faithful readers still out there, thank you for being patient with me. School is now over and I should be getting back on track with my schedule.

Tooldledo- Manage you to do’s

by kylepotts on Apr.22, 2009, under Tech

Everyone has a to do list. Some have it in a notebook, some keep a text file on their desktop, and some use their iPhones.

Me. Well I use a website and my iPod touch. The web site I use is called Toodledo

Is is a pretty basic tool, but comes with a lot a features. It has the ability to import to do’s from other programs and databases, and can export all your to do’s also.

Another good thing about Toodledo is that way to access it. They have an iPhone App which I use everyday for school, and just basic things around the house.

They also have a https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3789>Firefox Extension which makes it easy to take notes or to do’s from an email for webs site. You can also set up a keyboard shortcut to takes note if you the type of person that likes shortcuts.

Thats how I keep track of my to do’s. Leave a comment and tell me, what to do’s applications do you use?

Software Review: Chris Pirillo’s Adobe Air App Pixie Check List

by kylepotts on Apr.02, 2009, under Tech

We all know Chris Pirillo, no need for an introduction. Chris recently released some of his one Adobe Air Applications.

Chris asked some people to write a review for his software. So here it goes.

The Good

  • It is cross platform. It is an Air application. Runs on Linux, Windows, and Mac.
  • Install is easy since it isĀ  an Air application
  • The UI is small and easy to learn (uncluttered)
  • It is very easy to export a database for the To-do’s
  • The Application is functional and does what it is supposed to do.

The Bad

  • It is almost to simple to donate for
  • The whole UI is filled with links to Chris’s Blog, Twitter, and Youtube (This one pisses me off)
  • There are plenty of other free web applications and desktop applications that are much better.

How can we fix this?
Hard question easy answer. Open source. If Chris would put out the source code to the software his following of geeks would take hold of it and craft it into what I think would be an amazing program that might actually be useful. Or if Chris can make the software more functional. Why should I donate to Chris for reinventing the wheel? I think that is terrible to ask for a donation for such a simple app. How about ” Hey try out this software, and let me know what you think” That sounds much better than “Hey donate for this software”.

If you would like to donate or get this application. Head on over to http://www.apps.pirillo.com to get them.

Can teens blog?

by kylepotts on Mar.22, 2009, under Tech

If you are new to this blog you may not know, but I am a 15 year old kid. Thats right the content you are enjoying comes from a 15 year old kid sitting at his desk. Weird to think that huh?Or is it? Blogging is just another form of journalism, and students have been journalist for years. From the school newspaper to local news papers students have been writing stories for the public for a while.

Why does it seem so weird to have a 15 year old blog? Is it hard to comprehend that a teen knows this much about technology. I don’t think so, but some adults and even teens do.It really doesn’t matter I (and my generation) are the future, and this is the way we communicate along with (Mypsace, Facebook, and Instant messaging). This is the way the future will communicate and get its news.

The only reason I bring this up is because I have had a few people come to me and say that I should be more concerned with school then my blog. I told them politely that I am an A,B student and do well in school. They looked at me like I was crazy.

I understand that these people don’t understand that blogging is a form of journalism, creativity, and expression. What I don’t get is how people can be this ignorant.Blogs have been around for years now, and now are basically mainstream. Then why can’t a teen be mainstream? Why can’t a teen be free to tell people about technology?

If you have an opinion about this subject go ahead and leave a comment, and don’t feel closed out to turn me down. I understand that some other people have different opinions

P.S.

This conversation happened between me and a teacher. This shows where are tax dollars are going…
